Recently, both Ukraine and Poland have experienced a significant increase in forest fires, largely due to climate change. Additionally, there has been a rise in high-intensity “megafires,” which spread rapidly across large areas, often crossing national borders. This project aims to address the challenge of large-scale forest fires in the Ukrainian-Polish cross-border region, as well as the insufficient capacity of fire services on both sides of the border to provide an effective and coordinated response.

The project activities are designed to address gaps in monitoring, communication, and coordination mechanisms between Ukrainian and Polish fire rescue and emergency services. To achieve this, joint instructions will be developed to establish unified standard operating procedures. Furthermore, a shared Monitoring and Elimination of Forest Fires system, utilizing a multifunctional GIS, will be created for the Carpathian region. Upgrades to existing infrastructure and equipment for forest fire management, along with their integration into a single network, are also planned in Ivano-Frankivsk, Uzhhorod, and Brzozów.

Given the critical role that vehicles play in the swift response to large-scale forest fires, all project partners will acquire specialized vehicles equipped with advanced technology, ensuring timely containment and extinguishment of fires. The project also includes an educational component, combining theoretical and practical training sessions for rescuers.

To engage communities and raise awareness of the dangers posed by wildfires, the “Save the Biodiversity” campaign will be conducted, featuring a variety of events for both children and adults.

The project will bring about sustainable improvements in forest fire management across the Carpathian cross-border region, with lasting benefits for both people and nature.
