Water is a limited and vulnerable resource, essential for life and development. Inefficient management of this resource leads to water losses, and deterioration of drinking water quality and poses sanitary and environmental risks. Unfortunately, the Polish-Ukrainian borderland area also faces these problems. In the Bukowsko commune, the village of Dudyńce does not have a sewage system, as a result, the environment (especially streams) is polluted through leaking septic tanks. On the Ukrainian side, in Rudky, the town centre lacks a functioning sewage network and individual septic tanks do not meet sanitary requirements. The old sewage network infrastructure is highly degraded and disused.

Within the WaterWise project, construction of sewage infrastructure and improvement of sewage management in Bukowsko Commune and Rudky Town, is planned. The length of the sewage infrastructure will increase by 4,086 metres on the Polish side and 2,513 metres on the Ukrainian side. Rainwater storage and reuse infrastructure will be developed in both Bukowsko Commune and Rudky. Two rain gardens will be constructed in Dudyńce and Pobiedno villages (Bukowsko commune). In Rudky a reservoir will be created to collect rainwater and then use it for firefighting. The level of awareness of residents about the water cycle and the need for water management in the target areas will be increased through the organisation of workshops and conferences.

Through the implementation of the project, the sewerage infrastructure in the cross-border area will be developed and more inhabitants will be connected to the sewage network. Environmental pollution, especially of the waters in the transboundary rivers Wysznia and San, will be considerably reduced.
