The main challenge faced by the communities of Augustów (Poland) and Burshtyn (Ukraine) is inadequate water and sewer infrastructure, which means substandard water supply, inefficient wastewater management, and environmental degradation. The existing infrastructure shortcomings cause health hazards, limited economic growth, and compromised environmental sustainability.

CleanWater project addresses this issue by expanding and improving the water and sewer networks, promoting responsible water usage, and safeguarding natural resources. In Augustów, the extension of the water supply network and partial reconstruction of the water supply will help to improve access to clean and safe water for the residents. Conversion of deep wells into a water treatment plant will ensure improvement of water quality and reduce potential risks associated with groundwater contamination. The trenchless renovation of the sanitary sewage network will minimise disruptions. On the other side of the border, the planned activities include reconstruction and construction of sewage networks in Burshtyn. Moreover, partner will take measures to protect underground water and eliminate sources of their pollution at the station of the second rise in Demyaniv village, which will enhance sewage collection and treatment, contributing to cleaner and healthier living conditions. The conferences and educational initiative (student competition “Care for Nature, Save Water!”) will foster a deeper understanding of sustainable water management among stakeholders and the public.

By addressing critical infrastructure gaps, the project will ensure the availability of clean and safe drinking water, reduce the risk of contamination, and contribute to the sustainable development of both regions.
