Historic parks are valuable elements of our natural landscapes, providing intrinsic environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits. Many of these old parks, which surround manor houses or churches, have the potential to serve as public spaces and tourist attractions. However, many of them are in poor condition, facing problems such as dead and infected trees, degraded areas, and a lack of basic infrastructure.

The main objective of the BIODIVERSITY project is to restore and protect the biodiversity of historic parks in Poland and Ukraine. The project involves developing concepts for the maintenance and protection of old trees in historic parks, including the Strzyżewice commune (Piotrowice), the area surrounding the Public Provincial Specialist Hospital in Chełm, the commune of Zymna Voda, and the vicinity of the Saint Yura’s Archcathedral in Lviv. The project aims to valorize the natural resources of these historic parks by assessing their current condition. This includes conducting dendrological analysis, archaeological research, water retention analysis, and preparing site and height maps for design purposes, and historical inquiries. A Centre for the Protection of Ancient Trees will be established, and the equipment necessary for the research and further maintenance of parks will be purchased. Additionally, the project will contribute to increasing awareness and enriching knowledge about historic parks through study visits, and various environmental and educational activities. These will include training, quests, conferences, and meetings with residents. The result of these efforts will be a set of  guidelines designed to help park managers in further developing and enhancing green areas.

The BIODIVERSITY project aims to protect areas of natural and cultural value while harmonizing the management of these areas.
