Through the implementation of the project, the partners would like to initiate and promote cross-border cooperation in the field of environmental protection. CitiesOfGreen project is a response to the need of three communities. In inhabited areas, buildings and paved surfaces heat up during the day and release some of the heat during the night. This phenomenon leads to the formation of urban heat islands. Furthermore, impermeable surfaces lead to the irretrievable loss of rainwater, which is particularly dangerous during the periods of recurrent droughts. In the city of Siedlce, the green infrastructure is insufficient, and the number of green public spaces is low. In Horodok, the central park, established in the last century, is characterised by cluttered, chaotic tree planting, poor accessibility, and there is no lighting. Meanwhile, the village of Ivanne, has no park at all.
The partners of the CitiesOfGreen project decided that they would increase the green space and preserve biodiversity in the area covered by the project. On the Polish side, 9 pocket parks will be built in the city of Siedlce. On the Ukrainian side, 1 park will be renovated in the Horodok town and 1 park will be constructed in the Privilne commune. The installation of elements supporting environmental education (educational boards, birdhouses) is planned in the areas of the created parks. In addition, the partners will jointly develop an action plan for environmental education. They will also carry out a distribution of green plant cuttings (trees or shrubs, meadows with flowers) in their areas. This aims to engage the local community in better care for their environment. Siedlce will organise an eco-picnic to encourage residents to spend time together. During the event participants will have an opportunity to visit stands dedicated to nature conservation issues and the European Funds.
Residents of the project areas will have an access to new green spaces that will improve their living conditions. The infrastructure created/revitalised as part of the project will be accessible to all interested parties, including people with disabilities.
