specific objective

1.1 Promoting climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention and resilience, taking into account ecosystem-based approaches

Lead partner

City of Augustów (Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland)

A major problem in the Programme area is the ever increasing negative effects of climate change. These are causing periods of drought and water scarcity, flooding, waterlogging and increased numbers of forest fires. Major challenges include adapting to, preventing, detecting, and providing warnings of natural disasters. Mutual cooperation is essential to adapt, prevent and mitigate climate change, particularly forest fires. These phenomena require the capacity of the emergency services to respond effectively to threats. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to equip existing units with vehicles and rescue equipment necessary for operations on land and water.

The main objective of the project is to improve cooperation in the field of preventing and combating natural disasters and climatic threats by training and equipping rescue units in the border area. To ensure a comprehensive approach to identified problems, partners are planning to implement investment activities, training event and tasks promoting the project and its effects. On the Polish side, purchases will include rescue and firefighting vehicles and equipment for water operations: a boat with engine and a boat trailer, a rescue and firefighting vehicle, a quad with rescue equipment and 6 sets of small specialised firefighting equipment. On the Ukrainian side: fully equipped special diving stations, fire tender, 2 water scooters, 3 drones, 3 sets of hydroacoustic communication stations, 2 special underwater lighting stations, a mirrorless camera, station for hydraulic testing of oxygen cylinders and 6 underwater metal detectors. Exchange of experience between both sides will be possible during 3 joint training events/exercises for the fire and rescue services. A promotional campaign is planned – 2 informational picnics for residents, visitors and tourists.

The project will contribute to the improvement of equipment and training of units from Poland and Ukraine, counteract threats, safety of residents, protection of property and the environment in the project area. The implementation of the project creates a strong basis for further development of cooperation between the partners.
