Access to clean water and efficient sewage systems is the most basic human need and it should be a norm. Unfortunately, this is not the case everywhere. A big problem for some of the inhabitants of Jarosław (PL) is the lack of a sewage system. In Zalishchyky (UA), wastewater flows directly into the Dniester River, which is very polluted. Lack of access to improved sanitation systems leads to contaminated wells in rural areas of Ukraine and groundwater, increasing the risk of many diseases.

The main objective of the PACT project is to create effective cross-border cooperation between the towns of Jarosław and Zalishchyky in order to develop joint solutions to this problem with the support of the EU funds. Approximately 8.4 km of sewage system will be constructed in Jarosław. Around 280 residents (over 90 buildings) in the northern part of the town will be connected to this network. Moreover, the wastewater treatment plant in Zalishchyky will be reconstructed. It will be used by  approximately 9,000 people. A sustainable water and wastewater management strategy will be developed, which will enable, among other things, water conservation activities in the project area. Its elements will include surveys, reports, meetings with the participation of residents from both towns and training courses.

Proper municipal wastewater management will create and maintain sustainable water management in these areas. The result of the project will be a significant improvement of sanitation and water quality. It will create conditions for the development of construction, industry, and tourism and improve the standard of living.
